Of course Oeroeg, first published anonymously in 1948, is a Dutch novel of growing up, of Bildung. The tale's main protagonist, a nameless and faceless narrator, grows up in the mysterious and glossy nature of indies, only slightly supervised by his distant and cool parents of plantation in West Java. He passes, rather unhamed, through his early youth, cultivating an in timate friendship with Oeroeg, a boy of the same age. However their friendship starts to disintegrate, the result of political and cultural conflicts that force the boys to take a stand in the Indies' heterogenous an multi layered society.
