It is said that the sumerians were the world's biotech pioneers. Among other things they were the first to apply directed fermentation to product development. In the 2,500 years since then, however, precious little in the way of biotech has come out of the middle east. The fabulously oilrich like dubai, abu dhabi, qatar and saudi arabia now aim to change that. Buidling a viable biotech industry in places like these is a part of a wider strategy to build a 21st century, knowledge based solely upon oil and gas. To get from here to there, oil wealth will be invested to build lab and office infrastructure and lure biotech talent from abroad...
