The genome sequence of pseudomonas fluorescents Pf-5 provides new insight into how this bacterium protects its plant host. Pseudomonas group of Gram negative bacteria, are ubiquitous in soil and water. They can be found with plant or animal hosts, often as simple commensals, but also occasionally as pathogens or as protective microbes. Host protection has been studied extensively in the case of certain biocontrol strains of pseudomonas species that colonize the roots of crop plants and thereby prevent fungal diseases.
