Ambitious plans by the european commission (EC) to double research spending during 2007 - 2013 were quietly shelved during the run up to a political summit of EU heads of state on June, 15- 16. The present budgetary impasse, combined with an ongoing paucity of funding, has cast doubts over the long term development of a pan european research effort that can rival that of the US. Besides the directorate general (DG) for research, the EC's science funding arm, still has to convince biotech companies that its belated efforts to adapt its funding schemes to their needs will be more suitable than before...
