In last year's march issue (nat biotechnol 22, 267-268, 2004), Frank Rainer Schmidt provided an example of past research relevant to the current topic of RNA interference (RNAi). As a follow up we would like to briefly review previous work at calgene (davis, CA, USA, now part of monsanto, st. louis, MO, USA) on the use of antisense technology to silence the gene encoding tomato polugalacturonase (PG). These data were published over the period 1988-1992, and on inspraction may have involved the production of double stranded RNA...
