Isi artikelNumerous adenosine to inosine editing sites found in mRNA sequences raise new questions about the biological significance of RNA editing. RNA editing is a process that results in the synthesis of proteins that are not directly encoded in the genome. One type of RNA editing involves the conversion of adenosine (A) residues into inosine (1) residues through an action of ADAR (adenosine deaminases acting on RNA). When functioning improperly, this essential process in mammalian development can give rise to pathological conditions ranging from epilepsy to malignant gliomas.
