The search for truth is in one way hard an in another way easy. For it is evident that no one can master it fully nor miss it wholly. But each adds a little to our knowledge of nature, and from all the facts assembled there arises a certain grandeur. Scientific progress cannot take place in a vacuum. Indeed by its very nature, good science relies on peer review, replication of experiments and the accumulation of a body of data. Although the practice of sharing data upon publication is widely accepted as a fundamental tenet of good science, the application of high throuput technologies to biological experimentation, such as large scale DNA sequencing and microarrays, has resulted in new challenges to the implementation of this principle.
