The adult mouse pancrease contains precursor cells able to differentiate toward both pancreatic and neural lineages. The global prevalence of diabeters has spurred efforts to generate insulin producing pancreatic b-cells from progenitor cells of either embryonic or adult origin. A paper in this issues by seaberg at al. Reports the surprising finding that single murine adult pancreatic precursor cells can generate progemy with characteristic of neuroectodermal and pancriatic cells. including b-cells. This reuslts lend support to the argument that adult pancreatic progenitor cells capable if making b-cells exist, a subject to recent debate. They may also be relevant to efforts to generate b-cells for therapeutic purposes.
