The US NCI is speraheading efforts to create a national network for storing cancer tissue samples as well as an international informatics grid to share data. Aaron Bouchie reports. The US National cancer Institute (NCI) is bethesda, amryland is currently taking inventory of tissue samples from over 60 cancer centers to determine the need for standard operating procedures in biospecimen collection, storage and data analysis. Developing such standards is an important first step in helping cancer researchers generate more comparable, higher quality data. At the same time, the NCI is pioneering the creation of a virtual network that links similar databases from around the world.
