Not where they used to be, as the world gets warmer. Edith's checkerspot is an unremarkable brown, white and black spotted butterfly whose main distinguishing characteristic is taht it is watched, with obessive but benevolent attention, by camille parmesan, a biologist at the university of texas. Ms Parmesan is troubled by what is happening to the butterfly. The populations at the southernmost end of its range in california have been dying out. The vegetation it lives on is gettng dryer, which makes it hard for newborn caterpillars to survive....
