Let is first examine how the japanese system of annual paid leave is guaranteed by law. We do this because, in considering the possibilities of long-term leave, Japan's system of guaranteeing rights to annual paid leave (labor standard law, article 39) is unique from the viewpoint of comparative law and this forms an important background to the issues concerned.
