"Where does your river begin?" details a journey to the headwaters of the Niger River in 1988, 4 years after the death of the socialist liberator of Guinea, Sékou Touré, and 2 years before refugees from war-torn neighbors begin crossing the Guinean border for asylum. The article includes observations of collaboration between various clans and ethnic groups settled in the area, notably the reciprocal relationship between the Kourouma, Masters of the Earth, and the Touré, Masters of theWord-and-Waters, who perform crucial rites at the source to keep the river flowing.
