There is some question about the value of examining historical developments in a technology-driven field like online learning, since, a new innovation (e.g., the Web, cell phones, digital video)can fundamentally alter the course of events. However, the human and organizational elements do not change quickly (or at all) and it is critical to understand how they will affect the evolution of technology.
