Cornwall is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the UK. Since the 1950s Cornwall has marketed itself primarily on its natural attractions, coastline and beaches. However, changing tourism markets have prompted development of a range of heritage tourism initiatives. Because Cornwall’s heritage and history are contested, the ways in which Cornish heritage is represented and by whom has become a very controversial issue. Cornish ethnonationalists have been protesting against the tourism industry since the 1980s, particularly against centralized heritage operators. In addition, a greater acknowledgement within Cornwall of the marketability of cultural 'difference' has also influenced what kind of tourism initiatives are promoted. In this article, I argue that an increased international awareness of a distinctive Cornish (rather than English)identity is changing Cornwall's dominant heritage narrative, and that as mining becomes highlighted as a central feature of 'Cornishness', there has been an increased focus on promoting industrial heritage.
