Most East Timorese hoped that the long-awaited declaration of independence in May 2002 would mark a new beginning. curiously, however, they continue to conjure up the spirits of the past. over the last three years, the Dili press has published a host of articles reporting widely divergent views about the country's history, parliament has engaged in heated historical debates, and a commission for reception, truth, and reconciliation was estabhished to research and repot on the history of human rights violations.
