The history of the Indonesian occupation of the Portuguese colony (1975-99) has yet to be written. while its legacy continues to be played out in presentday political struggles between the older and younger generations, particularly over the question of which language to adopt, we possess little understanding of the ways in which the East Timorese interacted with the Indonesians during those terrible years.
