Britain's finance directors, beset in recent months by rising inflation and borrowing costs, should have been basking in the comfortable throught that at least one affliction was being cured. Company pension plans, which swung alarmingly into deficit after share prices began to plunge in 2000, were supposed ti be in the road to better health.
