Isi artikelPhonemic awareness is one's sensitivity to, or explicit awareness of the phonological structure of the words in one's language. Phonemic awareness training is a systematic effort that has a purpose to teach and train phonemic awareness on children. This study was intended to find out the effect of phonemic awareness training on prereading skills of preschool students. Thirty preschool students participated in this study, 15 were in first experimental group (analytic method) and 15 were in second experimental group (synthetic method). Prereading skills test was administered before and after the training. The result of ANOVA shows a significantly difference between the effectivity of synthetic and analytic method sin improving phonemic group were higher than of the synthetic method group. This study found that there is improvement in prereading skills test scores after the training. After the training, each subject of both groups has higher scores on phonemic identity, correspondence of letter - sound, reading and pattern recognition of syllables. The result of this study shows that phonemic awareness training is effective in increasing the prereading skills of preschool students.
