Isi artikel
A private foreign company that handles corn cultivation in indonesia was merged with a larger multinational company, which has a good record in safety performance for decades. The managers of the cultivation company face the challenging tasks of building a new safety culture. Using Bass 91985) theory of transactional - transformational approach, this study examines the extent to which the transformational leadership style and perceptions about safety climate are predictors for involvement as a safety change agent. Work records are used to gather the criterion measures for managers' involvement in safety activities. For the predictors, self report and subordinate ratings on the multifactor leadership questionnaire (form 5X - short) and the work safety scale are used. Results do not reveal a significant correlation between transformational leadership and involvement as a safety change agent. Intellectua stimulation is negatively correlated with perceptions of supervisor safety. Furthermore, active - management - by - exception and Laissez Faire styles have positive correlation with perceptions of management safety practices. Disucssions with people at the company about its culture are useful to understand theses findings.
