Isi artikel
Vocabulary knowledge is becoming increasingly important in foreign language learning because learning a foreign language is mainly concerned with learning its vocabulary. The findings of the study conducted by Kweldju (1997) showed that Indonesian learners of English were confronted with two limitations, their vocabulary size and knowledge of collocations. Considering the importance of vocabulary, it should be made the basis of language teching. The lexical approach believes that language does not consist of grammar and vocabulary, but of multi-word prefabricated chunks. Learning vocabulary is to focus on larger units of words. The lexical approach holds the view that lexis is the basis of language. Lecis is different from vocabulary in that it includes not only the single individual words with fixed meanings but also the word combinations that are stored in human mental lexicons. Thus, memorizing individual words and their corresponding meanings is not enough becasue larger units hence forth called chunks must be taken into consideration. Chunks are deemed important in facilitating languange production because they are the key to fluency, which is attained by retrieving and combining the acquired prefabricated chunks from memory and the basis for any linguistic novelty or creativity. This paper attempts at elucidating how lexically-absed vocabulary learning may be implemented as well as describing the corresponding materials. The classroon procedure is also presented. A sample unit of lexically-based materials resulting from a recent developmental study is provided in the appendix.
