The International Shipping and Port Facility (ISPS) Code, introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in December 2002, establishes an international framework between governments, local administrations, shipping, and port industries in a bid to enhance maritime security. These different organizations must work together to promote port and ship security and must implement specific measures to ensure overall security, including IMO approved training for all employees and enhancing basic security by upgrading equipment. By July 1, 2004, the 1621MO member countries must implement the ISPS Code, otherwise ships could be denied entry into other foreign ports.
