A Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is used to evaluate the role of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) biosensor in optimization of biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. Results show that BOD biosensor can be used to estimate the current status of organic carbon in the waste, allowing reduction of SBR cycle time and increasing the nutrient removal efficiency. A 'quiescent period' in the anoxic/anaerobic phase was found, to mark the commencement of aerobic phase in the SBR. The reduction of cycle time from 8 hours to 4 hours increases the efficiency of the nutrient removal to almost double.
