In a good collaborative learning process, the outcome exceeds the sum of what individuals can do on their own. However, when the boundary conditions for collaborative learning interfere with the processes for upholding it, collaboration may not achieve its desired effects. This article includes a case study with junior high school classes in Norway that used an inquiry-based, web-based discussion forum (FLE) in a natural science course. The purpose of this study was to identify socio-technical conditions for sustainable technology-based environments.
