Osteoarthritis is a disease showing change of structure and function of the joints caused by progressive degeneration and destruction of the joint cartilage. this disease can be treated by orally administration of glucosamine sulfate. glucosamine is an amino sugar that is physiologically used both as substrate and precursor for the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycan and proteoglycan. proteoglycan, collagen type II together with water constitute the predominant components of the cartilage matrix. in a normal joint, the chondrocytes are able to produce sufficient glucosamine, whereas in osteoarthritis the biosynthesis of glucosamine is defective and insufficient, resulting in an insufficient production of glycosaminoglycan and proteoglycan.
