During the course of this century, all forms of medical education and the practice have been appropriated by the language and method of science. the rise of laboratory experimentalism and biomedical reductionism has led to a belief that good medicine is scientific medicine. our medical students do not know that our work with patients requires knowledge and understanding beyond the merely scientific philosophy of medicine can provide a potent vehicle for developing that knowledge and understanding. it will provide the basis for a more balanced approach to medical education and pratice, an approach that embraces teaching in both medical sciences and medical humanities.
