Human cloning and human embrionic stem cell research belong to the most vividly discussed topics in present biomedical ethics. this article explores the ethical debate. there is a nearly unanimous consensus to oppose reproductive cloning. about stem cell research there is more diversity of opinion. therapeutic cloning as such poses not so many new problems, but still remains problematic as a part of research that destroys embrionic life. the author endorses suggestions to establish a moratorium on this kind of research. possible alternatives should be given sufficient chance to develop first.
