The prevalence of HIV infection/AIDS among intravenous drug users (IDUs) is very high. in term of harm reduction, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in IDUs can be lowered by using methadone - a sintetic oiate already known in medical practices-for maintenance therapy in the methadone program (MMP). to start a MMP. the criteria of the patients admitted to this program, the location, facility, staff members, secutity, and the budget of this program should be determined, and the socialization of this program among the key persons in the local society is very important. the MMP should be integrated to phychosocial treatment services.
