Isi artikel
The following study examines the representation of beauty in an advertisement of a particular cosmetic brand "Sari Ayu Martha Tilaar." Prominent women characters of traditional Javanese puppet such as Srikandi. Larasati. and Sumbadra are employed in this ad as a symbol of Javanese culture. The theme and design of this ad are appropriated to the concept embedded in the product. namely "The Charisma of Java. Never Ending Beauty" to promote color trend for the year of 2002. Adopting Roland's Barthes semiotic analysis, the study discovers that this ad intentionally using women's bodies as a symbol to reinforce the Javanese myth of beauty. The theme and the design of the ad create such images that reinforce the concept of beauty adopted in Javanese culture: women as nurturers and women being close to nature. Women thus will be trapped in their own fantasies to always pursue the "never-ending" beauty offered by the products.
