It is very difficult to give the exact meaning of modernism. some connect it with the spirit of liberalism. the scholars who are usually considered to be modernists like Blondel (philosophy of action), Sabatier (direction), Loisy (tendency), James (pragmatism), Bergson (intuitionism) have their own notions with regards to religious questions. learders of the church saw that the faithful faced enemies all around and created the idea of papal authority, supported neo-scholasticism as the official theology in the church, and opposed the critical study of the Holy Bible,etc.
