This article discussses some strategies that can guide the design of online instructional environments that embed scaffolding elements. the proposed guidelines are based on research findings from the fields of educational technology and cognitive psychology. such scaffolds include organization and presentation of information that facilitate perceptual attention and information processing ; articulating tacit knowledge of experts and making it avilable to the learners trough modeling, demonstrations, and coaching; supporting both novice and expert approaches; and, overall, ensuring that learning needs of the students and provide support while they take responsibility for their own learning.
