Higher education in most economically-developed countries is now facing a number of challenges that are quantitatively and qualitatively different from those they have previously faced, including the introduction of the 'new' information and communications technologies (ICTs). this introduction is often justified in terms of the need to respond to what ehrmann (1996) refers to as higher education's 'triple challenge'-to increase the accessibility of high-quality education of ICTs to the notion of student-centeredness and referring to the emergent and convergent educational practices as 'flexible learning'.
