Churchill's observation about architecture and bureaucracy rings in higher education. the factory mentality of the previous two centuries is seen today at all levels of education in orderly rows of forward-facing classroom seats, students moving from subject to subject by the workday clock, and learner performance measured mechanically. it can be difficult for the most zealous classroom innovator to initiate teaching strategies that are not congruent with the dusty padagogical attitudes decreed by tradition, administration, and architecture.
