Most readers are familiar with the history of quality improvement (QI) and how it helped save the U.S. automobile industry. many of us are also aware of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program, which was started by the U.S. department of commerce (American Society for Quality, n.d.). the prominance of QI and the emphasis on quality in the United States suggest tahth there is more to this than improving the quality of product and service.
