Djscussjon has tended to centre on whether there js an arms race jn the regjon and jf power projection forces are bejng acqujred. TMs article takes a djfferent vjew: jt djscounts the anTIS race and power projection theses, whilst acknowledgjng that there are competitive elements of the anTIS build-up and an illcreasillg capacHy to extend mj]jtmy reach. But the most jmportant ftndjng js that there are - and are Hkely to be over the next decade - sedous defjdendes jn the mj]jtary capabj]jties of most Asjan defence forces. These deftdendes resMe prjndpally jn jnformation warfare, majntenance and jntegrated logjstic support, and jojnt force doctrjne. And they are more pronounced ill Southeast Asja than elsewhere ill Ash Unless they are rectjfted, these weaknesses wj]] undermjne combat effectiveness seriously.
