This article is an interpretation of the history and role of one of the principal, albeit less well-known, players of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea - the Son Sann-Ied Khmer People's National Liberation Front (KPNLF). It describes the initial formation of the movement and provides insights into its relationship with its coalition partners, the communist Khmer Rouge, and the Sihanoukists. At a time when a political solution to the Kampuchean problem still appears unlikely, it is argued that the KPNLF represents a viable option for a non-communist, democratic Kampuchea.
