This paper present modular aproach to the problem of fast fault detection and classification. Althogh the specific application example studied is transmission line system, the method would be appicable to arbritrary dynamic system. We emphasize the use of concepts from signal processing and wavelet theory, to create fast and sensitive fault indicator in the model free. If the fault is detectable, it must produce changes in monitored variable, which may be small but can be enhanced with signal processing technique. After a detection, the fault indicator is processed by Kohonen Network to classify the fault. Result of computer experiment with simulated faulty transmission line are include.
