The vision of an East Asian community has been articulalted by the East Asian Vision Group (EAVG) in its Report "Towards an East Asian Community", submitted to the Leaders of ASEAN Plus Three (APT) at their Fifth Summit in Brunei Darussalam in November 2001. The East Asian Economic Community has been proposed through the creation of an East Asia Free Trade Area. This article discusses strategies towards the development of new regional trading arrangements in East Asia. ASEAN will be the focus of analysis and its is argued that ASEAN must have a strategy for creating both ASEAN Economic Community and the East Asia community. They have to be pursued in parallel.
