The issue of decentralization often occupies much in the agenda of public discussion. While some quite optimistic that the policy of regional autonomy will achieve its targets, others throw deep sceptimism. This articles analysis the possible impacts of the regional autonomy on the West Sumatra regional development. The article argues that the implementation of regional autonomy provides positive as well as negative impacts to the regional development activities in West Sumatra.
