Recently, there have arisen numerous opinions, including criticisms of the teaching professions, which were directed at both the teachers themselves and other related aspects, such as how teacher education institutions (LPTK) train teacher candidates. Many say that teachers tend to have low quality and teach in an uncreative way. Nevertheless, one of the ignored aspects was to find out the real situation of the teachers in question when they carried out their professional tasks. What has been widely discussed was only the issue of the low teachers ‘salaries. Based on research, this article argues that apart from the salary issue, mathematics teachers face a lot of problems carrying out their professional tasks which then hinder them to perform in a satisfactory way. The teachers ‘problems include the difficulty understanding and implementing the new curriculum (competency-based curriculum), planning and implementing learning activities in line with modern learning principles (such as constructivism), and managing teacher-workload which is on the whole relatively a lot and various. The Mathematics Education Study Programme at the teacher education institution can play a role to assist teachers to face and overcome the above problems.
