In comprehending a spoken language, one must go through series of processes. one of them is identifying the functions of the utterances uttered by the speaker. Inferring functions of utterances comes in between befire comprehending the spoken discourse. The same condition applies in listening task of TOEFL test. The fact is that not much study concerning functions of language n TOEFL listening section has been done. Of particular concerns that knowing language functions assists comprehension and that not much study has so far been done when it comes to TOEFL, this paper intends to analyse the types of functions of language covered in the listening section of TOEFL, from which findings will give a new horizon and contribution to its theoretical and pedagogical implications, namely teaching listening in geenral and teaching TOEFL, listening, in particular.
