Metaphoric competence of EFL learners is closely related to the competence in the TL. The competence in the TL itself is manifested in at least four factors : 1) accuracy, 2) clarity, 3) appropriacy, and 4) complexity. Similarly, the competence in creating and using metaphors involves at least four dactors : 1) metaphoricity, 2) clarity, 3) appropriacy, 4) novelty. This research investigates the metaphoric competence of EFL learners by rating their metaphors in terms of the four factors. The result shows that the higher the competence in the TL the higher the competence in creating and using metaphors. However the high metaphoric competence is manifested in different forms.
