This study analyzes the content of English textbooks for elementary schools used in Surabaya. As a means to analyze the textbooks, Donaldson's ten principles for teaching English to young learners are used. In addition the GBPP (the basic course outline) of English Local Content Subject that is based on the 1994 Curriculum for the Primary Education in indonesia is also used as the basis to examine the topics presented in the books. The findings show in general, the materials in the textbooks meet those ten principles as outlined by Donaldson, but not all of them absolutely follow the curriculum.
