It has been the purpose of this paper to draw upon recent development in the study of improving learning through reading from texts. Two determining factors in improving learning from text are the characteristics of the written material and the metacognitive strategies of selective attention devices for learning from text. The most important characteristics of a scientific or technological written material is that it is a stable instructional system. Stability lends the possibilities of applying scientific knowledge to the development of instructional material. The development of selective attention strategies for learning from text includes selecting and studying the main idea, filling in the details, summarizing, self-questioning and reciprocal questioning.
