Each type of lipoprotein, a multicomponent complex of protein and lipid, has a characteristic molecular weight, size, chemical composition, density, and physiological role. One of its functions is as a vehicle in the plasma of water insoluble lipids from the sites of synthesis and absorption to the sites of storage and utilization. Lipoprotein metabolism occurs by way of two transports: exogen and endogen. While HDL prevents cholesterol deposit in endotel estrahepatic tissue via a "reverse cholesterol transport" mechanism, LFIL may cause cholesterol deposit in endotel extrahepatic tissue.
