Isi artikelSeveral studies have shown that the concept of shop profit is not acquired before the age of 9 or 10. Children believe that shopkeepers make a living by selling goods at the same price they paid for them. The conceptions of fifty 8 to 9 year old children about shopkeepers' profit were examined by means of the Piagetian clinical procedure. The interview was followed by a "comparison task," which checked whether children understood that if a shopkeeper sells a commodity for the same amount of money slhe paid for it, total expenses and income must also be equal. Children were then taught that retail prices must be higher than wholesale prices for shopkeepers to achieve both personal expenses and resupply of their shops. A post-test 2 weeks after training indicated that teaching had a higher impact on children who performed correctly in the comparison task. This result suggests that children must be trained to compare costs and income before being taught the notion of shop profit.
