Isi artikelPreservice teachers' reports (N = 156) of their disciplinary experiences involving punishment within their own families of origin were used to predict subsequent selection of punitive or non punitive classroom management strategies. Discriminant function analysis produced a shrunken canonical correlation of .60 between punishment history and strategy selection. The pattern of structure coefficients suggests that authoritarian upbringing is related to subsequent selection of punitive classroom management strategies. Implications for teacher training in classroom management strategies are discussed.
