The aim of this essay is to pMvide a discussion on the links between the currency crisis, macroeconomic adjustment and labour market policies. Some empirical data on Indonesia will be discussed. One finding is that labour market policies did not contribute to the development of the crisis in Indonesia. Rapid deregulation of financial sectors and the open capital account policy have made Indonesia vulnerable to volatile short - term capital flows and rapidly changed risk -assessments on the side of investors. Thus, future stabilisation and adjustment policies will focus more on financial reforms, monetary policies and proper sequencing of capital account opening in the future.
