In commrmoration of the World environment Day the author has reviewed environmental law development and enforcement in Indonesia. There have been many environment laws enacted by the government since colonial times. these laws were only oriented to protect the rights od the user of the environment, However since the enactment of law No. 4 /1982 environmental laws have shifted its orientation to the environment, Furthermore, social awareness on the environment demanded the replacement of previous laws with law No. 23 / 1997. In geenral, environmental law is not yet fully well enforced. It is due to lack of authority awareness and loopholes in the law itself.
