The Indonesian economy has enjoyed continued strong growht during the first half of 1997. However, as a result of hevay preossure on the domestic currency which began in July 1997, the economy was subjected to unprecedented turbulence in the second half of the year in August 1997. One of the Central's Bank first responses was to abandon the intervention band within which the Rupiah had previously been traded. As a result, the Rupiah, became a free-floating currecy. At the same time a series of measures ws introduced to strengthen the banking sector. Currently, almost all if Indonesia commercial banks until the end of June 1998, have shown net interest of a negative income, because of negative spread between sources of funds with higher interest rate and use of funds. Operating profit earned before taxation generally were foreign trading activitis that consists of export and import transactions along with banking services and foreign exchange trading.
