Isi artikel
The occurence of flooding in Singosari (east java) on March 13, 1998 was the second mud flood in this town. The flood was followed by heavy rainfall and land slides that occured around Arjuno mountain. Deforestation caused forest fires several months ago. The forest fire destroyed roots of trees which originally bounded solidly in the soil. As a result, rock formation and soil slided easity together when it was soaked by heavy rain fall. Land slides usually accompany mud flood. It impounded five villages aroung Singosari. By using NOAA data and rainfall information, we could have detected the flood earlier. The results of the study showed that Singosari and surrounding villages were covered by heavy, convective clouds on March 13, 1998 which caused mud floods and land slide. Based on rainfall information several days before the mud flood, there was very heavy rain on March 13, 1998 (107 mm) and this influenced land stability of Arjuno mountain.
